Chaka don't play · Jul 17, 04:19 AM by Chaka

Judging from some of the comments generated by our Syd Barrett appreciation last week, there are still a lot of nice folks out there that still take post-Barrett Floyd pretty seriously. Hey, that’s really neat.
But seriously, folks, I’m genuinely stoked that people like that are roaming out there in the blogosphere and are occasionally finding us. I believe mp3 blogs should be about much more than Tapes n’ Tapes.
Speaking of fossils, as a recovering record collector who went completely digital years ago, this article is extremely depressing.
So the crazy, fucked up Islamist radicals of Hezbollah bumrushed the Israeli border and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers. The crazy, fucked up radicals of the Israeli government responded by rampaging civilian and terrorist targets alike (well, okay, mostly civilian – but, hey, freedom isn’t free, right?) and making ominous threats towards the crazy, fucked up radical Syrian leadership and the crazy, fucked up radical Iranian government. And then there’s the craziest, most fucked up radicals of them all – the ones with the itchy security council veto and the direct hotline to God and the 135,000 troops about 800 clicks from Beirut. Are there any other planets available?
And I love Bush’s statement accusing Hezbollah of “stop(ping) the advance of peace”. God damn it, you guys, we were totally almost there and you completely fucked it up for us.
Kind of crabby about Packer season being so close yet so far away at this point. I’m READY. I have no idea what to expect from the 2006 Oneida Street Bullies. My guess is that optimism and fantasy walk hand in hand at this point, but I’m hopeful.
Chaka’s 40 Years of Rock & Roll Project has me swimming through the murky straits between the Bush administration’s military retaliation and the Bush administration’s military insanity alongside the 2002 playlist. I would have guessed that overall I enjoyed the music of the last half of the 90s to the first half of the 00s, but there sure wadn’t nobody out there in the 90s nothin’ like Missy Elliott and Timbaland. This track, like too much hip hop, lasts at least 2 minutes too long, but before it overstays its welcome…daaaamn.

More evidence that the 00s might be better than the late 90s is that royally corporate tunes broke through far more often. Pink’s “Get This Party Started” was fabulous until it was invaded and occupied by Hollywood. Eminem was closer to Kid Rock than Chuck D, but he was still able whip out his best track (“Without Me”). Avril Lavigne was aimed at the Nickelodeon crowd? Really? If this track came out from Karen O, everybody’d be creaming all over it.

The other Northern State tracks I’ve heard suck, but this, their first single, is undoubtedly my all-time favorite cross between early Beastie Boys and The Slits. Unintentional political relevance here for the civilians of Lebanon that are dying in stereo right now.

Can anyone recommend any other Interpol tracks? Great Caesar’s Ghost, this is one killer number.

Listening to music without memory, like The Project forces me to do, can cause your mind to play some tricks on you. Perhaps the most ludicrously egotistic chart top five hit of all time, I still was curiously rocked by “Jenny from the Block” (that’s Jennifer Lopez up, Pink Floyd down, if you’re scoring at home).

Couple requests. Anybody have mp3s of this year’s Stereolab tour single, “Solar Throw Away” b/w “Jump Drive Shut Out” they can flow my way? I’ll post ‘em here too. I made the choice to see New Pornos with Belle & Sebastian the night of Stereolab’s most recent stop here in town (and was glad I did) and missed my chance to score this single. Another mp3 request I have is for Quasi’s “Live Shit”, which was bundled with the first few copies of their 2003 release, “Hot Shit”. Much obliged.
