Blinded by the blue: Lush cover The Magnetic Fields' "I Have the Moon" · Apr 15, 05:14 PM by Don

Lush bubble fun!

Lush was sometimes dismissed as “My Bloody Valentine Lite,” but famous fans like Jane’s Addiction, the Flaming Lips, and Elvis Costello might disagree. And me. I disagree. Or do I? I see why someone might make such a claim; there were superficial sonic similarities, but Lush did distinguish itself. Though both bands were/are co-ed quartets, Lush was fronted by two women. Second, unlike My Bloody Valentine, Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi wrote songs that could actually be, or actually were, pop hits. On one side of the Atlantic, anyway.

For this 1996 b-side, Lush fattened up the Magnetic Fields song, “I Have the Moon,” transforming it from a delicate music box confection into a grand, stately hymn. It reminds me of the even grander “Plainsong” by the Cure. The song is the b-side to “500 (Shake Baby Shake),” the second single off Lovelife, the band’s third and final album. Unfortunately, drummer Chris Acland committed suicide in October 1996, only a little over three months after the release of the single.
