Song of the Day: "Heaven Up Here" by Echo & The Bunnymen · Jun 12, 10:44 PM by Don
I hadn’t heard “Heaven Up Here” by Echo & The Bunnymen since the ’80s. Two years ago, I heard Kelley Stoltz’s stellar cover of it on a Q magazine compilation, which recasts the razor-sharp rocker as a dreamy acoustic stomper. So, today, after having become accustomed to the Stoltz version, to hear Will Sergeant’s slicing guitar and Ian McCulloch’s manic vocals was a real treat. I forgot how much it rocked. Forget silly labels like “new wave.” McCulloch would agree. In a 1980 interview he said, “I always say ‘We’re a rock band’. Because I’m proud of that.”
Now give a listen as the Bunnymen and their biggest fan bring heaven down here to earth and spit it out your speakers.
