Song of the Day: "It's Not My Fault" by Soul Asylum · Jun 14, 09:41 PM by Don

In the early ’70s, Marlo Thomas put together an album and television special to teacher her niece, and all kids, about life. Both were titled Free to Be… You and Me.
One of the most famous segments from the TV show was Rosie Grier singing, “It’s Alright to Cry.” Rosie Grier is, as may know, a former New York Giant, and, as you may not know (I certainly didn’t until recently), the man who subdued Sirhan Sirhan after he shot Bobby Kennedy.
In 1988, Thomas resurrected the Free to Be concept and put together Free to Be… a Family: Songs and Stories About All Kinds of Belonging for A&M Records. Post-punk bar band Soul Asylum, who was signed to A&M at the time, was asked to play on it. I don’t know if the songwriters, Sarah Durkee and Christopher Cerf, had Soul Asylum in mind as they were writing “It’s Not My Fault,” but Dave Pirner and co. make it their own.
You might be bein’ perfect,
Might be actin’ good as gold,
But people fight no matter what you do!
We catch each other’s anger
Like we catch each other’s cold.
That’s when you gotta tell yourself it’s not because of you!
