Touching from a distance: Spotlight on Joy Division · May 26, 09:53 PM by Don

Anton Corbijn’s Ian Curtis/Joy Division biopic Control is on its way. The film, based on Deborah Curtis’ book, Touching from a Distance, debuted at Cannes to general acclaim. A four-minute trailer with French subtitles popped up on YouTube earlier this week. Check it out below. The decision to film in black and white was the right decision. The b&w combined with the motionless camera gives the film a timeless quality.
Here is some Joy Division to help you prepare…
mp3: Joy Division – Digital :: from Substance: Joy Division 1977-1980 (1988), originally on Still (1981)
mp3: Joy Division – Isolation :: from Permanent (1995), originally on Closer (1980)
mp3: Joy Division – No Love Lost :: from Substance: Joy Division 1977-1980 (1988), originally on An Ideal for Living (1978)
LCD Soundsystem recently covered “No Love Lost.” Dare I say, it’s a smidge better than the original. Check it out at The Music Slut.

mp3: Dsico – Love Will Freak Us :: mash-up of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” & Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On” (downloaded 2003)
Most mash-ups, like most examples of any genre, are pretty mediocre. Dsico’s mash-up of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” & Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On” is not; it’s downright masterful. Fair warning: Joy Division purists may get their wince, and not their freak, on. (Fun fact: The photo of Missy is by Anton Corbijn. Though I couldn’t confirm it at press time, I’m fairly certain the JD and Ian pics are Corbijn as well.)

Some smashing downloads here, and this film looks like a must. If you see my blog, I’ve done a couple of posts on the boys.
