With David Lynch’s new movie, Inland Empire, scheduled to play Milwaukee next month at the Times Cinema, it seems like a good time to post the John Vanderslice song, “Promising Actress.” I was listening to a complete live set I’d downloaded from Vanderslice’s site and this song stuck out for me, and not just because it was about Lynch’s 2001 movie, Mulholland Drive. What really gets me about the song is how Vanderslice repeats the movie’s title in the chorus, dropping the “h” in “Mulholland” as he does so. Sublime.

One of my favorite concerts of the past five years would have to be seeing the Arcade Fire at Mad Planet in Milwaukee in November 2004. I can’t wait to see the band in Chicago in May. Here’s hoping they get back to Milwaukee sometime in 2007. Scott from Stereogum saw the band in NYC last week and loved one part of the set so much he had to mention it twice in his review:
Musical highlight: The transition from “Ocean Of Noise” to “Rebellion (Lies).” Just sayin’.
Listen for the “Ocean Of Noise” > “Rebellion (Lies)” transition on both nights. Good shit.
Mp3’s of the February 16 set can be found here. I snagged “Ocean of Noise” and “Rebellion (Lies)” and fused them together into one track. Enjoy having your spine tingled:

On Billboard.com today, there is a piece about Tony Wilson battling cancer while trying to stay on top of his In the City project. Near the end of the article, his involvement with the upcoming Joy Division film, Control, is mentioned:
Wilson also serves as an associate producer on the now-completed Joy Division film “Control,” due out later this year. But he didn’t get his way with the soundtrack, which he wanted to be comprised of emo bands revisiting Joy Division material. The album will instead reportedly feature a blend of vintage Joy Division songs and covers by bands like U2 and the Killers.
“One of the greatest cover versions of [Joy Division’s] ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is Fall Out Boy’s — a wonderful acoustic version,” he says. “Even though the hero of emo is Morrissey, the great song of emo is ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart.’ An emo soundtrack would introduce Joy Division’s music to a whole new generation.”
Listen to Fall Out Boy’s cover and see if you agree with Mr. Wilson. I’m not a Fall Out fan, but I like this version.

I’m jealous that you saw AF @ Mad Planet! That would have been freaking great. I’m planning to make the trek out to Chicago as well to see them.
Also, thanks for the Vanderslice tune…very cool stuff.
