Singing about the sun (in other words, August re-posting begins) · Dec 22, 06:25 PM by Don
I spent the past week soaking up Andy Partridge’s Fuzzy Warbles box set. As expected, it features a one of my favorite Partridge tunes, “Prince of Orange.” I’d originally found the song on Napster (the good, old Napster, not the new, dumb Napster). Andy Partridge offers this about the origin of the song at John Relph’s stellar Chalkhills site.
“The yellowing track sheet of this seven (?) track recording has the date 3rd August 1994 and the heading ‘Automatic Writings’. I remember starting to put to tape random chord changes and disparate sounds, e.g., Ramones guitar, jazz piano, Giorgio Moroder synth bass, etc. Really things that were stylistically far from each other. I would then write the first things that came into my head, trying not to organise or make sense of them. What did I end up with? Well, in hindsight, it was high summer, I think I’m singing about the sun, its benefits (e.g., crop growing), and the court of Louis XIV, which I was reading about at the time, all smashed together. As for the crying, where did that come from? P.S. the other fruit of the automatic writings session was ‘My Brown Guitar’.”

Dude, I’ve been looking for the J*F*E songs off that rockin’ EP for ages now. I had the CD a while ago, but it got stolen… and since it’s no longer in print, I can’t find it. Thanks. Those songs are the best ones they ever recorded.
