June mp3 action, part the second · Oct 19, 05:00 AM by Don

Howdy folks, scroll down to find the rest of the June mp3’s.
But on your way down, consider our latest question: What is your favorite album-closing song and why?
I’ll kick it off by saying “Sacrificial Bonfire” from XTC’s Skylarking album (you may already know the album is an Enik favorite if you’ve peeked my picks pics at right). The song is almost cinematic in how it evokes the titular pagan rite. One would normally expect Andy Partridge to craft a paean to paganism, but it is actually Colin Moulding who wrote and sang this tiny epic.

Chaka here. Boy, is this a tough question. Do I go all philosophical and bore you with a discussion about how the iPod has completely obliterated the concept of the album? Do I risk credibility by repeating the theory (or urban legend) that, back in the vinyl days, artists were encouraged to put their lamer album tracks at the end of each side, since, as the grooves ran closer together, fidelity suffered? Do I point out that classic albums quite frequently have classic closing numbers (“Soul Survivor”; “EMI”; “Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World”; “Darling Nikki”; “Mystery Achievement”; “After Hours”; “Answering Machine”; “The Big Country”, just to name a few off the top of my head)
Or do I let this perfect piece of rock & roll summation stand alone?

Enik's urban legend alert: toilet spiders Hats off to helmets!

‘Down In The Tube Station At Midnight’ on The Jam’s ‘All Mod Cons’ (best version of the song going, with a sudden cut off, the sound of a train leaving the station and then the guitars and drums piling back in) ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ on The Smiths’ ‘Hatfull of HOllow’ (which was a compilation album, but still…) which is perfect and even more perfect because of the scene in Hatfull of Hollow where Ducky lies alone in his room listening to it whilst Andi is out with Blaine) and ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ on ‘Who’s Next’.

die kreuzen ‘all white’ is actually:
NO TIME
Time has run out
And you can’t see why
Can’t understand
You won’t even try
Stupid stupid person
Your head’s turned around
Facing the wall
You still can’t see
No one’s there
You just don’t care
There was never time for you
There ain’t none left for me

Street Spirit (Fade Out) on Radiohead’s The Bends. That CD was playing in my car on 9/11 and this song came as I drove home. The song seemed to capture the whole day perfectly. Maybe that’s an odd reason to like a song so much.
